OPINION:
In one of the longest press conferences of his presndicy, President Obama basked in the afterglow of two Supreme Court decision, saying with a broad smile that it was “a really good week.”
Last week, Obama won support for his trad package in Congress, then the court upheld Obamacare and ruled that states must perform same-sex marriages. Obama noted that crowds gathered outside the White House Friday night to see the president’s residence bathed in rainbow lights, the gay rights symbol.
“That made it a really good week,” Obama said during a press conference. “To see people gathered in the evening outside on a beautiful summer night and to feel whole and to feel accepted and to feel that they had a right to love, that was pretty cool.”
Obama joked often with the reporters in the East Room, at one point lamenting that he could not go onto Pennsylvania Avenue to join revelers be “I would have had to clear out all the people.”
“I did not have a chance to comment on how good the White House looked in rainbow colors,” Obama said. “The only bad part about it was I couldn’t go out and peek at it myself because then I would have had to clear out all the people, or the Secret Service would have. So I could only reflect on it from a television screen. That’s a moment worth savoring.”
