My heart goes out to Vice President Joe Biden and his entire family over the tragic loss of Mr. Biden’s son, Beau Biden. At age 46, Beau Biden had accomplished much in his professional life as a public servant, having served in the military during the Iraq war and two terms as attorney general of Delaware. He was popular in Delaware, and he wanted to serve his state even further by running for governor in 2016.

Vice President Biden has endured tremendous personal loss in his lifetime. This latest loss of a child adds overwhelming grief to the sad burden he has had to bear over the years.

Just a few weeks ago, during Police Week, I was present at the Top Cops dinner in Washington, where Joe Biden spoke to the group of 700 law- enforcement professionals in attendance. His speech was heartwarming, touching and absolutely sincere. He received two long standing ovations of appreciation because everyone in that room knew he meant every word of what he said.

Joe Biden is a man easy to identify with because beyond being a political figure of high stature, he is a genuine human being and a man of character and integrity. Consequently, the American people feel his pain and share his grief.

Joe Biden is undeniably a model of strength and inspiration. A parent should never have to bury a child, and his burden is even greater now with this additional round of tragedy in his lifetime. It is important that he know that the nation stands with him. May he be comforted by fond memories of Beau. Hopefully, the support and love of his family, friends, colleagues and the nation will help him as he grieves. Beau Biden, rest in peace.
