A little more than three weeks after making his season debut, Washington Nationals infielder Anthony Rendon returned to the 15-day disabled list on Friday, this time with what the team said is a strained left quadriceps muscle.
Veteran infielder and Washington native Emmanuel Burriss was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Rendon’s spot on the active roster. Reed Johnson was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to make room for Burriss on the 40-man roster.
Rendon was not in the starting lineup on Sunday or Thursday, and he was removed from Wednesday’s game in the ninth inning. When asked about Thursday’s absence, manager Matt Williams said that Rendon had “been dealing with some soreness.” When pressed, Williams said that the soreness was in Rendon’s left quad.
“It’s nothing with the knee,” Williams said. “He’s had a little bit of an issue with the quad that he’s been playing with, so we’re make sure that we look at days that we can give him. [Thursday] was one of those days that we’ve scheduled. So, we need to make sure that we’re mindful of his progress, too.”
Rendon’s quadriceps strain is in his left leg, which was also the site of the sprained medial collateral ligament that bothered the 25-year-old during spring training. Then, during the rehabilitation process, he strained his left oblique. He did not appear in a game with the Nationals until June 4.
In 18 major-league games this season, Rendon is hitting .290 with five extra-base hits and five RBI.
