A group of teenage boys are in the process of inventing condoms that change color when they come into contact with STDs like chlamydia or herpes.
Muaz Nawaz, 13, Daanyaal Ali, 14, and Chirag Shah, 14, of London’s Isaac Newton Academy are the brains behind the “S.T.EYE” condom.
“As a public health person, I applaud their creativity and willingness to transfer innovation to a world that usually doesn’t have much consideration in that age group,” said Dr. Ward Cates, distinguished scientist and professor emeritus at fhi360, a nonprofit “human development” organization, CNN reported Friday.
The young men say that different diseases would cause their condoms to change different colors.
“Anything that would get youth to wear condoms, I am for,” Dr. Cates added, CNN reported.
The idea propelled the boys to an award at the TeenTech Awards, which included $1,568 in prize money. The students have also been invited to Buckingham Palace.
CNN reported that a condom manufacturer believes the idea is feasible and has reached out to the boys to help them get their idea to market.
