Chinese authorities seized smuggled frozen meat from the 1970s before it was sold to restaurants and retailers.
Roughly 800 tons of meat meant for Hunan province was taken off the street during a government operation, CNN reported Wednesday. Not all of the packages were from the 1970s, but many were stamped with dates from the tail end of the country’s Cultural Revolution.
Customs authorities in Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan, confirmed to CNN that reports of the operation were accurate.
The street value of the goods was estimated to be $1.6 million. Some of the meat was said to have come from India.
