Those who look to the skies in Poland this weekend may see something other than airplanes and helicopters: the “abortion drone.”
The Women on Waves nonprofit organization will uses the drone to drop abortifacients into a Polish town. Activists will secure the drugs and take them to women, The Telegraph reported Monday. The drugs are approved by the World Health Organization.
“We can’t stop pointing out the lack of safe access to abortion and medical abortion pills. It’s a violation of women’s rights. We have to make every effort to make sure they get that access,” said Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, founder and director of Dutch-based organization Women on Waves, the newspaper reported.
The group’s efforts, which will commence this Saturday, are in response to Poland’s abortion laws. Women are only allowed to have abortions if “there is a serious threat to her health, in cases of rape or incest, and when the fetus is seriously damaged,” The Telegraph reported.
The “abortion drone” flying into Poland this weekend will launch from Frankfurt, Germany, and drop their payloads in Slubice, Poland. The aircraft will carry mifepristone and misoprostol, the newspaper reported.
