A couple in San Jose, California, found a patriotic solution for their brown, unwatered lawn after the city began rationing water usage in the face of crippling drought.
While some residents have taken to painting their lawns green, Claudia Decker and her husband took 15 cans of red, white and blue spray paint and painted a giant American flag on theirs, a local CBS affiliate reported.
“My husband went along and sprayed the edge, and that was it. We measured 21-inches-wide, and 13 stripes, 50 stars,” Ms. Decker said.
The flag initially went up in honor of Flag Day, but the Deckers plan to keep it at least through the Fourth of July.
“[Neighbors] have asked how to do it. They said, ’Are you going to do it for our lawn, can you maybe come over and show us?’ ” Ms. Decker said.
San Jose has put into place some of the state’s toughest water conservation laws. Each home is now assigned a certain amount of water, which is 30 percent less than what homeowners were allowed in 2013, CBS reported.
