Ken Stabler, the quarterback who took the Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl win, died in Alabama of colon cancer according to a statement from his family.
Mr. Stabler, who also starred for the Alabama Crimson Tide under legendary coach Bear Bryant in the 1960s, died Wednesday night after a four-month battle with the disease, the family said in a statement first posted Thursday evening at Al.com for the Birmingham News and Huntsville Times.
He was the Raiders’ leader for much of the 1970s and took them as far as the AFC title game on several occasions and finally broke through with a 32-14 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI in 1977.
