DENVER — Liberal billionaire Tom Steyer plowed $5 million into his NextGen Climate Action in the last reporting period, which was $4,997,543 more than all other donations combined.
The latest Federal Elections Commission report shows that contributors other than Mr. Steyer invested just $2,457 in the super PAC, which is focused on combating climate change by defeating Republican Senate and gubernatorial candidates.
The disparity between the San Francisco hedge-fund billionaire’s contributions for the month of May and those of the rest of NextGen’s supporters quickly drew hoots from conservatives.
“It doesn’t seem like this NextGen thing is really catching on,” said the website Colorado Peak Politics in a Wednesday post.
Since January, NextGen has raised $5,209,053, with $207,257 coming from the NextGen state committees in Maine and Michigan, where the super PAC was active in 2014. The total from individual donors other than Mr. Steyer: $8,893.
Then again, NextGen doesn’t appear to need anyone else. Mr. Steyer was the single biggest individual donor to outside spending groups in 2014 with $73 million in donations, nearly all of that, or $70 million, to NextGen Climate Action, according to the Center for Responsive Politics’ Open Secrets website.
