A July 4 fireworks accident has apparently cost defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul a finger on a day in which the New York Giants were not allowed to see him at the hospital.
According to a tweet by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, doctors Wednesday amputated the right index finger of the Giants lineman at a South Florida hospital.
Mr. Schefter’s tweet also linked to a photo of the medical chart detailing the procedure.
The report came the same day that multiple sports outlets, from ESPN to Deadspin, reported that Giants team representatives tried and failed to visit him at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where he was being treated for burns on both hands.
“Team officials flew down on their own to check on him and try to determine how extensive his hand injuries were, but those officials were not welcomed once they arrived,” ESPN wrote.
According to a report in the New York Daily News citing “a team source,” the Giants had no knowledge of the amputation until after Mr. Schefter’s report.
The difficulties between the team and Mr. Pierre-Paul, 26, come at a time when the two sides are trying to come to terms on a lucrative contract extension.
The star lineman wasn’t the only NFL player to lose digits over Independence Day weekend. The Lincoln (N.C.) Times-News reported that Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup cornerback C.J. Wilson lost two fingers on one hand.
