The White House blasted House Republicans Thursday for leaving on summer vacation without finishing important legislative business.
“The real problem is that House Republicans have skipped town and started their vacation,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest, who noted that GOP leaders “vowed to get government moving again” at the start of the year.
The House adjourned Wednesday night for its August recess, leaving many agenda items unfinished.
Mr. Earnest said the House leadership has failed to complete important business such as a reauthorization of the Export-Import bank, cybersecurity legislation and appropriations bills needed to keep the government running on Oct. 1.
He said the failure to renew the Ex-Im bank “means our economy and our workers are missing out.”
When lawmakers return after Labor Day, he said, there will be only three weeks remaining in the fiscal years and no spending bills completed.
“I do hope Republicans will do more than just rest and relax” on their vacation, he said.
