A 3-year-old girl was fatally shot inside a Southeast D.C. apartment complex Wednesday night, apparently by another child who was playing with a firearm.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the girl as Dalis Cox. Officials said in a statement Thursday that the girl was believed to have been shot by another child who found a firearm and was playing with it when the gun went off. The toddler died at a hospital where she was taken for treatment.
The shooting happened around 8:15 p.m. in a second-story apartment at the Benning Terrace housing complex in the 600 block of 46th Place in Southeast.
Police have not said whether the gun belonged to someone in the apartment or if it was found elsewhere by the other child. Officials noted Thursday that they are still investigating the case.
Police initially released a description of a man they were looking for in connection to the shooting but have since walked back the lookout.
