The White House said Wednesday that it supports Secretary of State John F. Kerry’s vow to “get to the bottom” of reports that two government watchdogs raised serious questions about Hillary Rodham Clinton’s mishandling of classified information on her private email server.
“I know that Secretary Kerry wants to get to the bottom of this,” said White House deputy press secretary Eric Schultz, adding that the White House supports him in that effort.
It was the White House’s first reaction to the news late last week that two inspectors general, for the State Department and the intelligence community, raised serious concerns about the mishandling of classified information via Mrs. Clinton’s emails as secretary of state, which were routed through a private email account and server.
“This administration takes the role of Inspectors General very seriously,” Mr. Schultz said. “Equally important is our commitment to properly handling classified and sensitive information.”
He added that Mrs. Clinton has “demonstrated a commitment to transparency” in answering questions about her emails.
