Donald Trump is enjoying the Silly Season, the dog days of summer when a crazy candidate burst to the top of the pack — only to crash and burn in the fall.

A new nationwide Washington Post/ABC News poll puts The Donald at 24 percent support among likely Republican voters. The next closest candidate was Wisconsin Gv. Scott Walker at 13 percent.

Jeb Bush was next at 12, Mike Huckabee 8 and Sen. Marco Rubio at 6. Sen. Rand Paul was in sixth place with 5.

The poll was conducted over three days — on the last, Trump said Sen. John McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent five years as a POW in Vietnam, was not a hero. “He was a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said at the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa. “I like people who weren’t captured.”

“Trump’s support was 28 percent in this survey’s first three nights of polling. While the sample size of registered leaned Republicans on Sunday is quite small, he dropped to the single digits that day,” ABC News wrote in a story about the poll.

Weirdly, the survey asked far more Democrats and independents about their views of Trump. “Partisan divisions are 30-21-39 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents,” the story said.

But most said they wouldn’t actually be voting for the thrice-bankrupt tycoon.

“A majority of Americans, including most Republicans, say Trump does not represent the Republican Party’s core values, and six in 10 overall – including three in 10 in his own party– say they wouldn’t consider supporting him for president were he the GOP nominee,” the story said.

Trump has made headlines since he entered the race, saying in his announcement speech that Mexico is sending its “rapists” and drug addicts and criminals to America. He’s also engaged in ad hominem attack on everyone from MSNBC hosts to magician Penn Jillette — whom he attacked at 3:18 a.m.
