Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky shoves pages of the tax code into a wood chipper and takes a chainsaw to them in a new ad from his presidential campaign.
“Hey, I’m Rand Paul, and I’m trying to kill the tax code — all 70,000 pages of it,” Mr. Paul, wearing a T-shirt saying “Detroit Republican,” says in the spot.
The ad asks “how would you kill the tax code?” and displays images of pages being burned, shoved into a wood chipper, and getting cut with a chainsaw by Mr. Paul.
“I think my favorite was actually taking a chainsaw to the tax code,” The GOP presidential hopeful said Tuesday on Fox News.
Mr. Paul says his tax plan is unique compared to plans other Republican contenders might be offering because it also gets rid of the payroll tax for workers.
“Ours is unique in that it also eliminates the payroll tax — under our tax plan, if you make $40,000 a year, you’re not going to pay a payroll tax,” translating to “$2,000 that won’t come out of your check,” he said.
“I think we have the best one, because we get rid of the payroll tax, we have a low rate, 14 and a half percent, and you fill out your tax return on one page,” he said.
