President Obama will try to sell his nuclear deal with Iran Tuesday to a convention of veterans and during another appearance on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart.
Mr. Obama will speak in Pittsburgh to the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ national convention, a day after the U.N. Security Council unanimously endorsed the nuclear deal with Iran. He’ll also highlight a final federal rule to protect military families from predatory lending and make the case that he’s working to improve conditions for veterans.
His speech comes amid persistent problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs, ranging from wait lists for health-care appointments to whistleblower retaliation to a new budget shortfall of more than $2.5 billion. The agency said it might be forced to close some hospitals if Congress doesn’t provide extra funding.
Mr. Stewart is ending his run on the “The Daily Show” on Aug. 6, and he’ll likely ask Mr. Obama about the nuclear deal that he and world powers struck with Iran last week. Many Republicans and some Democrats object to the agreement, which would limit Iran’s nuclear program in return for lifting economic sanctions.
Congress has 60 days to review the accord, and the president is vowing to veto any effort to unravel the deal.
The predatory lending rule, proposed last year, expands the categories of payday and short-term loans subject to added protections under the Military Lending Act. Administration officials said the new regulations, for example, will extend the protections to “payday” loans of more than $2,000 and for terms longer than 91 days.
