A married pair of former CNN reporters survived a robbery attempt at a New Mexico motel with the use of two personal handguns, though the encounter left the husband seriously wounded and their attacker dead.

Chuck de Caro and Lynne Russell were staying Tuesday at a Motel 6 in Albuquerque when Mrs. Russell was accosted outside the room by a gunman, CNN reported Thursday. After she was forced back inside the room, a gunfight ensued between the man and Mr. de Caro, who was shot once in the leg and twice in the midsection.

The gunman was found in the hotel parking lot by police and died at a nearby hospital.

“I am really proud of him. I thank him over and over for saving my life. He really is my hero,” Mrs. Russell said.

Albuquerque police do not plan to file charges against Mr. de Caro, CNN reported.

Mr. De Caro worked for CNN in the mid-1980s as special assignments correspondent. His wife, a former Headline News anchor, was a correspondent for the network from 1983 to 2001.
