In a phone call Tuesday, President Obama tried to reassure an irate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that a deal reached by the U.S. and other world powers will prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons.
Mr. Obama told the Israeli leader that the deal “will remove the specter of a nuclear-armed Iran” and will ensure “the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program going forward,” the White House said.
Mr. Netanyahu earlier Tuesday called the agreement a “bad mistake of historic proportions.”
Mr. Obama reiterated his administration’s “stalwart commitment to Israel’s security” and that the agreement does not diminish U.S. concerns about Iran’s support for terrorism or threats toward Israel.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter will visit Israel next week to consult on security issues.
