GOP presidential candidate Doland Trump on Tuesday called Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton ’desperate’ after the former first lady attacked him for his comments over Mexico and illegal immigrants.

Calling her a “failing candidate,” Mr. Trump said he has tapped into the silent majority’s opinions about illegal immigration and that Mrs. Clinton is “knowingly putting out lies about my stance.”

“She is desperate, she is sad, and she is obviously very nervous when she has to revert to issues that have already been settled given the absolute accuracy of my statement,” Mr. Trump said in a statement.

A day earlier, Mrs. Clinton told Mr. Trump to shut it after the Republican, in announcing his presidential campaign, said Mexico sends criminals to the U.S.

“Basta! Enough!” Mrs. Clinton told Mr. Trump as she addressed the National Council of La Raza in Kansas City, Missouri.

Mr. Trump, for his part, defended his original comments, saying he wasn’t attacking illegal immigrants themselves but Mexico for sending the worst of its people, who bring crime with them.

He also said Mrs. Clinton’s attacks on him are proof that he’s the top of the crowded GOP presidential field.

“The last person she wants to face is Donald Trump,” Mr. Trump said.
