OPINION:
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who jumped into the race for the Republican presidential nomination, took a shot at the frontrunners from both parties, saying America in 2016 doesn’t need another “name from the past.”
Walker, 47, said in an ABC News interview that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush can’t defeat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and GOP voters shouldn’t put their trust in him.
“I don’t think a name from the past beats a name from the past. I think you need a name from the future,’ Walker said, noting that voters “want a new, fresh face to lead this country going forward.”
“Not just Republicans, but I hear a whole lot of independents and even some discerning Democrats say that,” Walker said.
Walker joins Sen. Marco Rubio, 44, in saying that Bush, 62, and Clinton, 67, are blasts from the past that don’t understand the pressings issues of 2016.
“The Republican Party, for the first time in a long time, has a chance in this election to be the party of the future,” Rubio said in April as he announced his candidacy for president.
On Clinton, who had joined the race the day before, he said: “Just yesterday, we heard from a leader from yesterday who wants to take us back to yesterday, but I feel that this country has always been about tomorrow.”
Walker, who many believe is in the top tier of candidates, said on Twitter that he’s running “because Americans deserve a leader who will fight and win for them.”
“America needs new, fresh leadership with big, bold ideas from outside of Washington to actually get things done,” Walker said.
