LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Voters inured to Hillary Clinton’s lying?

OPINION:

Well, there she goes again. In an interview with CNN, presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton denied ever having received a subpoena related to her use of a private email server. It’s not true, but there’s nothing new there (“Hillary Clinton caught in lie: Benghazi committee contradicts claim of no subpoena,” Web, July 8).

Mrs. Clinton’s mendacity is already the stuff of legend. As far back as 1996, conservative columnist William Safire characterized Mrs. Clinton as “a congenital liar” and left-leaning Christopher Hitchens later titled a book about the Clintons “No One Left to Lie To.” Hollywood music producer David Geffen said to Maureen Dowd about the Clintons in 2008, “Everybody in politics lies, but they do it with such ease, it’s troubling.” Not surprisingly, as a committed Democrat, Mr. Geffen nonetheless supports Mrs. Clintons’s candidacy and raises funds for her.

Ironically, Mrs. Clinton’s chronic lying has inured the electorate to it. Voters seem so used to and even accepting of Mrs. Clinton’s mere nodding acquaintance with the truth that, as she said about Benghazi, “What difference, at this point, does it make?”
