Homer Simpson’s beverage of choice, Duff Beer, will soon hit store shelves.
The iconic fictional brew will initially be offered in Chile, “with plans to roll out to more of South America and Europe by early next year,” the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
“Simpsons” owner 21st Century Fox has been consulting with a brewmaster to get the flavor just right, and has plans for subtle packaging with no obvious nods to the TV show — just an exact replica of the cartoon brew.
The beer will be offered in the “Simpsons” section of Universal’s theme parks in Orlando and Los Angeles, but has not been slated to hit U.S. store shelves yet. But Fox isn’t ruling it out.
“I think there’s potential to have Duff everywhere in the world,” said Jeffrey Godsick, president of the media company’s consumer products division, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“The Simpsons” is extremely popular in Latin America and fake versions of the beer began popping up in South America, many in Chile.
Fox’s official product will make it harder for imposters to sell their own versions of Duff.
“Once you see enough piracy, you are faced with two choices,” Mr. Godsick told The Wall Street Journal. “One is deciding to fight it, and the other is deciding to go out [into the market] with it.”
The brew, created for Fox by British brewmaster Paul Farnsworth, will be a premium lager, Mr. Godsick said.
“It’s got a very good balance of flavor and refreshment to it. It’s fairly deep golden in color. It’s got a hint of fruit to it. It’s got a caramel aromatic to it,” Mr. Godsick told The Wall Street Journal.
