Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont Independent, said Friday that some of the attacks on fellow 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton are “unjustified” and that he’s focused on highlighting differences he has with Mrs. Clinton on policy issues.
“I have known Hillary Clinton for 25 years — I respect her, I like her,” Mr. Sanders said on CNN’s “New Day.” “I think she’s getting beaten up all over the place and sometimes it’s unjustified.”
Mr. Sanders is running second to Mrs. Clinton, the former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential front-runner, in much of the early public polling on the race for the Democratic nomination.
“I think what we have to do is focus on the issues, and my views are very different than hers on many important issues,” he said, pointing to trade policy and the 2003 Iraq War as examples.
“I am prepared to break up the large financial institutions because I think Wall Street has too much power — she has not been clear on that,” Mr. Sanders continued. “So, you know, I’m not going to be beating her up and attacking her in personal ways. I like her; we have differences of opinions on issues and that’s where my focus will be.”
