Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker remains the front-runner in the Republican presidential race in Iowa but his lead is shrinking and six other contenders are battling for second place, according to a new poll released Wednesday.
The Quinnipiac University poll showed Mr. Walker with 18 percent of likely participants in Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus, but that’s down from 21 percent in the same poll in May.
Jockeying for second place are Donald Trump and Ben Carson with 10 percent each, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas with 9 percent each and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush with 8 percent.
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rounded out the field, with 7 percent and 5 percent, respectively.
“Those who thought the Republican race in the Iowa caucuses might begin to clarify itself better think again,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll. “As even more candidates toss their hats into the ring, the race has gotten even more muddled.”
