Foo Fighters to play in D.C. Fourth of July, excited for star-studded RFK concert

Dave Grohl is coming home.

For the Fourth of July, the Foo Fighters’ frontman is bringing his band to the nation’s capital, where Mr. Grohl spent his formative years before being recruited to join the “other” Washington’s breakout grunge band, Nirvana.

To celebrate the Foos’ 20th anniversary, Mr. Grohl opted to throw his group a little — OK, large — homecoming celebration to coincide with America’s birthday, briskly lining up such supporting acts as Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Buddy Guy, Heart, Gary Clarke Jr. and LL Kool J to join Saturday’s all-day bill at RFK Stadium in Northeast.

During a June 12 show in Gothenburg, Sweden, Mr. Grohl took a nasty spill from the stage while rocking out to “Monkey Wrench,” resulting in a broken leg. Ever the professional, he soldiered on through the rest of the gig — playing guitar in a seated position and undoubtedly in excruciating pain.

The band immediately canceled its remaining European dates and flew stateside for Mr. Grohl to convalesce.

In an open letter to fans, the rocker wrote of his injury: “I need to make sure we have years of gigs ahead of us. I will do everything I can to come back and give you a night to remember for the rest of your lives as soon as possible.”

Immediately, D.C. fans worried their hometown hero might need to sit out the Independence Day festival.

But a wheelchair-bound Mr. Grohl, one of the industry’s hardest-working entertainers, pooh-poohed the notion of taking in the July 4 show from the wings.

“Can’t [expletive] wait for the 4th!!! See you at home, DC,” the band tweeted Monday.

Amid speculation that Mr. Grohl may be too injured to perform, the Foo Fighters remain the RFK show’s headliner. But the heightened anticipation about the show and the band’s anniversary, all but assure the guitar- and drum-playing Mr. Grohl will take the stage — crutches be damned.

On-site parking at RFK Stadium is available, but public transportation — especially Metro’s Orange, Silver and Blue lines — is recommended on Independence Day.

Mr. Grohl, the stage is yours. Welcome home.
