The pro-Russian hacker group CyberBerkut has claimed responsibility for a major attack on German government websites.

The websites for Germany’s parliament and Chancellor Angela Merkel were brought down Wednesday, allegedly by hackers demanding Berlin end support for the Ukrainian government.

“We appeal (to) all people and (the) government of Germany to stop financial and political support of criminal regime in Kiev, which unleashed a bloody civil war,” the group said on their website, Reuters reported.

“We will not forget. We will not forgive,” it said, CNN reported.

German authorities took countermeasures but failed to halt the attack, which gave Internet users error messages when they accessed the official government websites, Reuters reported.

It was believed to be the first successful prolonged attack on the government’s websites, the report said. The websites for Germany’s parliament and Ms. Merkel appeared to have been restored by 3 p.m. ET.
