EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The FBI has confirmed that a doctor was fatally shot at a West Texas veterans’ clinic in an attack that also left the suspected gunman dead.

Special Agent Mike Martinez on Wednesday declined to identify the doctor or the gunman.

The FBI is in the process of questioning hundreds of patients, staffers and others at the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System clinic at Fort Bliss who may have witnessed the shooting Tuesday afternoon.

Martinez says the FBI is taking leading the investigation because the shooting occurred on federal property.

Investigators haven’t said whether the gunman killed himself or was killed by someone else. They also have not indicated a motive for the shooting.

Martinez says the FBI will release more information at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
