Like all Volvos, the 2015 Volvo S60 is all about style, luxury and the art of being. Volvo has put much attention into constant consumer safety, and in this S60 it is no different. The Volvo S60 has received excellent crash test scores, but even better you still get a strong engine and quality design.
For 2015, the Volvo S60 offers a turbo and a supercharged engine and there is also the engine stop-start that is being included now on a number of 2015s across the board in order to save substantial fuel for the consumer.
Considered an entry-level mid-size luxury sport sedan, the competition includes Acura TLX, Audi A4 and the Lexus ES 350.
Trims on the 2015 Volvo S60 include the T5 Drive-E, T5 AWD, T6 Drive-E and T6 R-Design, and from there, you go into subtrim choices.
The T5 Drive-E and T5 AWD are much alike with roughly the same features including 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, LED running lights, headlight washers, heated mirrors, automatic wipers, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power driver seat, driver memory settings, power-folding rear headrests, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel,60/40-split folding rear seat with a pass-through and a seven-inch display screen. You also get the “Sensus” smartphone app integration and technology incorporated like WiFi capability, Bluetooth phone and audio connect and satellite radio, CD, auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB interface.
On the T5 Premier subtrim, add to that keyless ignition/entry, a sunroof, leather upholstery, navigation system, instrument display and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The T6 Drive-E has all the T5 Drive-E Premier’s goodies with the addition of a stronger engine, 18-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, power sunroof and sportier seats.
For the T6 R-Design trim, you get the T6 Drive-E’s features, with again, a stronger engine coupled with all-wheel drive. There are also distinct exterior and wheel differences as well as upgraded brakes, a sportier steering wheel and a rearview camera.
For add-ons, you can opt for a Convenience package with power-folding mirrors, keyless ignition and entry, rearview camera and a remote garage opener. Or on the Technology package, it’s adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, collision warning with auto braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection. And on the all-wheel drives, you also get a lane-departure warning system.
The high-end Platinum subtrim level can be had on the T5 and T6 models. And with that, you get the Convenience and Technology packages as well as additions of xenon headlights, auto-dimming outside mirrors, cabin accent lighting and a higher end sound system.
There are a few additional packages to add depending on the subtrim, which also includes the Climate package with heated windshield and washers, heated steering wheel and front and rear seats. There is the Sport package for the T5 with 19-inch alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension and paddle shifters.
Under the hood, the 2015 Volvo S60 T5 Drive-E offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine cranking out 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in an eight-speed automatic transmission. The T5 AWD has a six-speed automatic with a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5 that ups the horsepower to 250 with 266 pound feet of torque.
With the T6 Drive E, you get front-wheel drive including a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine with a whopping 302 horsepower and 295 pound feet of torque eight-speed automatic and the final performance option is the T6 R-Design with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine at 325 horsepower and 354 pound feet of torque.
Safety is of the utmost importance to Volvo and the 2015 S60 has all the safety features including antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side and full-length side curtain airbags. There are also whiplash-reducing front head restraints and what is called “City Safety” giving the driver the ability to avoid a collision with moving or stationary objects at speeds up to 19 miles per hour as “City Safety” applies the brakes for you.
On several of the additional packages, like the Technology package, you get the safety-minded pedestrian- and cyclist-detection feature and an electronic warning for driver inattention, lane departure and impending collision. As well, options include front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, front side parking camera, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alerts.
The design on the 2015 Volvo S60 speaks luxury and comfort with a combination of leather, vinyl and plastic on the inside making for a quality experience. Of course, in keeping with its Swedish roots, it’s streamlined and, take note of the wood and metal used, giving the S60 an impressive feel.
Design on the inside is also highly intuitive with the dual-temperature controls being easy to adjust and use compliments of the pictogram of a person that details exactly which dial you have pushed for climate location needs. While the back seats are a bit cramped for a tall individual, the front seats are more than comfortable with the option of sport-type seats. Overall, the hauling space is 12-cubic-feet, but the rear seats fold down and you can also fold-flat the front passenger seat too.
Driving is a natural extension in the 2015 Volvo S60, comfortable with plenty of robust power for getting around the curves and on the highway easy and smooth. No matter the trim you opt for you will certainly find that the 2015 S60 meets your expectations with your only choice being the level of goodies you need on this ultra luxurious vehicle.
Should You Need to Know: Volvo’s Swedish design spells perfection for interior comfort and the 2015 Volvo S60 is also priced much less than its competition.
Miles Per Gallon: On the 2015 Volvo S60 T6 Drive-E I drove the gas mileage came in at 24 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway.
