Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s motorcade has piled up a number of red light violations since November after a summer of lecturing the city that “no one is above the law. … Period.”

A local Chicago news station reported Thursday that the mayor’s motorcade has 17 traffic violations in less than three years.

“Since there’s a tail car, there are some instances where they need to get through a light because they can’t get separated from the first car,” Mr. Emanuel said of his most recent violations, Chicago’s WGN reported. Video provided Thursday by a local ABC affiliate, however, shows one instance of the mayor’s first car going through a red light.

“The footage shows his motorcade going through in a dangerous fashion through intersections. So he needs to stop,” William “Dock” Walls, a candidate for mayor, told ABC.

The station reported that Mr. Emanuel’s office has paid all its tickets.

“I said I was going to pay it, that is what I meant when I say ’above the law,’” Mr. Emanuel said, ABC reported.
