Facebook suffered a worldwide outage that lasted about an hour early Tuesday, but executives said the problem wasn’t external — from hackers — and rather internal, due to a system glitch.
“This was not the result of a third party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems,” Facebook said in a statement reported by The Associated Press.
The loss of service is believed to be the social media company’s longest-lasting since Sept. 24, 2010, when it went dark for about 2½ hours, AP said.
This latest glitch was reported in the United States, Asia, Australia and the United Kingdom and impacted access to the site via both desktops and mobile app, AP said.
