Ahead of a possible 2016 presidential campaign, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his allies have officially formed a leadership PAC that will allow Mr. Christie to travel the country and move to shore up a fundraising base as the next presidential campaign cycle gets under way.

The group, called Leadership Matters for America, was created as Mr. Christie joined a host of possible 2016 GOP contenders at GOP Rep. Steve King’s “Iowa Freedom Summit” over the weekend. Two men Mr. Christie could be competing with for the support of well-heeled GOP establishment donors, 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, were not in attendance.

Mr. Bush recently formed the “Right to Rise” PAC, with a separate super PAC of the same name, as he actively explores his own presidential bid; Mr. Christie had already been expected to follow suit.

Under a heading titled “Why Leadership Matters” on the Leadership Matters website, it says that America has been a nation that has always controlled events “and yet today events control us.”

“Why? Because leadership matters,” it reads. “It matters if we want to restore America’s role in the world, find the political will to take on the entrenched special interests that continually stand in the way of fundamental change, reform entitlement spending at every level of government, and ensure that every child, no matter their ZIP code, has access to a quality education.”

News of the PAC’s formation was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
