Mary Cheney, the younger of two daughters born to former Vice President Dick Cheney — and the one who’s openly gay — told a small group of students at American University that it’s high time for the Republican party to embrace same-sex marriage.

But, she added, that wasn’t likely to happen any time soon, Politico reported.

“I don’t picture the whole national Republican Party running to embrace the issue of marriage equality any time in the near future. I certainly don’t expect to see it in the party’s platform next year in Cleveland,” she said, Politico reported.

Ms. Cheney, 45, opened her talk by saying, Politico reported: “I’m Darth Vader’s daughter.” Her father was frequently labeled by the left as the classic “Star Wars” villain — a reference that he didn’t actually mind.

“I was honored to be compared to Darth Vader,” Mr. Cheney said in a 2011 interview with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham, Business Insider reported.

Ms. Cheney is married to her gay partner, but has engaged in a very public Facebook spat with her sister, Liz — who supports traditional marriage — about same-sex unions. The public disagreement went forth at a time when the latter Cheney was seeking a Senate seat in Wyoming.
