Hundreds of people were left without homes after a huge fire destroyed a luxury apartment community in New Jersey.

Among the displaced: New York Yankees announcer John Sterling, various media reported.

The fire broke out at The Avalon at Edgewater on the Hudson River, with flames reaching so high they could be seen from downtown New York City, Fox News reported.

Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland issued a local state of emergency, but said luckily, nobody was killed.

“To have no loss of life and so many people displaced, we actually feel fortunate and thankful,” ABC News reported.

Residents have been ordered to evacuate; area schools have been closed.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sterling said, the New York Daily News reported: “I don’t know what to expect. Now, I have nowhere to go. And I need a toothbrush.”
