A neighborhood in Northern Virginia is on edge after two dogs were mysteriously poisoned within 24 hours of each other.
Residents of North Columbus, a quiet community in Arlington, have put up signs on light poles: “Warning: Someone is poisoning dogs in our area,” the local ABC News affiliate reported.
The poisoned pets were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
A 5-year-old Chihuahua-daschund mix named Bonnie ate what seemed a piece of sausage while walking in her neighborhood, ABC reported. Her owner didn’t think anything of the snack until a few hours later, when she became ill and was rushed to the hospital.
That’s when the owner found out that Bonnie was the second dog that day to eat poison.
“I was just shocked this happened here,” said Anna Kaye, the daughter of the Bonnie’s owner, Scott, the affiliate reported. “I hope we catch them.”
The Animal Welfare League of Arlington is conducting tests to help determine if the poison was purposely planted.
