Left-leaning Hollywood moviemaker Michael Moore backed off critical comments he tweeted shortly after “American Sniper” hit the theaters, saying that his snipe about snipers being “cowards” was not aimed at Chris Kyle — and that, in fact, he never mentioned the U.S. shooter by name.

“Hmm. I never tweeted 1word bout AmericanSniper/Chris Kyle,” Mr. Moore tweeted, in response to the criticisms that have swirled over his earlier tweet. “I said my uncle killed by sniper in WWII; only cowards would do that 2 him, others.”

He also tweeted this: “So ppl want me 2tweet something bout American Sniper? Great acting! Powerful message. Sad ending. There.”

He also included a link to his Facebook post that gives more praise for the film.

But his most recent Twitter messages are somewhat of a backtrack of his earlier ones, which readers and media members alike took as his assessment of “American Sniper” and Mr. Kyle, given the timing of hist post.

In the hours after the release of “American Sniper,” Mr. Moore tweeted: “My uncle killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren’t heroes. And invaders r worse.”
