Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, has been discharged from a hospital after breaking a number of ribs and bones in his face in an accident while exercising.

A Reid spokeswoman said Friday he has been discharged from the University Medical Center hospital in Las Vegas and will return to Washington this weekend ahead of the Senate’s scheduled reconvening next week.

“He spent the day with his wife, Landra, talking to fellow senators, friends and staff and preparing for the Senate’s return,” said spokeswoman Kristen Orthman. “He sends his thanks to all those who sent warm wishes and is ready to get back to work.”

Mr. Reid was injured after a piece of equipment he was using to exercise broke. He was first brought to St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson by his security detail and was then transferred to UMC for further testing, where he was admitted overnight as a precaution, according to his office.

President Obama called Mr. Reid Friday morning to wish him a “full and speedy recovery,” according to White House spokesman Eric Schultz.

“The president was glad to hear the leader is doing well, and will be back in Washington this weekend,” Mr. Schultz said.
