Several gunshots were fired out of a moving vehicle on a public road outside Vice President Joseph R. Biden’s house in Greenville, Delaware, on Saturday night, the Secret Service said.

Neither the vice president nor his wife were home at the time of the shooting, which occurred around 8:25 p.m., according to the Associated Press.

“A vehicle drove by the vice president’s residence at a high rate of speed and fired multiple gun shots,” Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback told CNN. “This occurred on a public road outside the established security perimeter. The shots were heard by Secret Service personnel posted at the residence and a vehicle was observed by an agent leaving the scene at a high rate of speed.”

Authorities said they took a driver into custody after the man tried to pass a New Castle County police officer as he was securing the outer perimeter of the area around 9 p.m.

The individual was reportedly arrested for resisting arrest. It was unclear if he was connected in any way to the shooting, officials said.

It was not clear whether any of the shots hit Mr. Biden’s residence, which sits roughly 300 yards back from the road, or even whether his home was the target of the shooting, officials said.

The Secret Service is working with the New Castle County Police on investigating the incident.
