Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is well-positioned for another possible run and that Mr. Romney is in a position to “write himself a check” to jump-start a potential candidacy.
Mr. Huckabee, who recently left his show on Fox News as he ponders a potential 2016 run of his own, said Mr. Romney has a “formidable” organization, name recognition, and great ground game support.
“He’s a credible candidate, plus Mitt’s in a wonderful position talking about money, he can write himself a check and get the whole thing jump-started,” Mr. Huckabee said on Fox Business. “So you have to take [him] very seriously.”
“I think it was a surprise to a lot of people when he indicated that he was going to be running because he had been so very clear all through the months prior that he was absolutely not going to do it,” Mr. Huckbee said.
Mr. Romney, who is scheduled to address the Republican National Committee’s winter meetings Friday, has not yet made a formal decision on whether to enter the 2016 race or not. His wealth and business record were used as a cudgel against him in 2012 not just by President Obama, but by GOP rivals during the party’s nominating contest as well.
Mr. Huckabee said his own decision on whether or not to run would come “later in the spring.”
