Three prosecutors and 21 police officers were ordered arrested by a Dominican Republic court, after officials noticed that more than a ton of cocaine has gone missing in recent months.
“In one way or another, they became drug traffickers,” said general prosecutor Francisco Dominguez, The Associated Press reported. “This type of situation is unacceptable.”
The accused includes a former director of an anti-narcotics unit, AP said.
The prosecutors and police are believed to have underreported — or outright failed to report — various drugs seizures over a span of time, AP said.
One drug seizure in September, for instance, involved roughly 2,000 pounds of cocaine, but it was never turned in to the proper authorities, prosecutors said.
