Former President Jimmy Carter says he doesn’t think there’s any need for criticism over the lack of a higher-profile presence from the Obama administration at Sunday’s march in Paris.
“The president sometimes can’t go where he’d prefer to go,” Mr. Carter said Monday. “He’s just come back from vacation so I think he’s probably got a lot on his desk. … As you know the secretary of state is going over there to represent us.”
Mr. Carter was asked about the criticism at a press conference for an exhibit on disease eradication at the American Museum of Natural History, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Soon after the comments, White House press secretary Joshua Earnest said they should have sent someone with a higher profile to be at the unity march, held in the wake of the string of terror attacks in France last week.
