Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s latest “no” to the question of her 2016 president campaign has taken on a new meaning — one that could truly mean “no” — because of a simple change in verb tense.
The Massachusetts Democrat had been accused of being a bit coy with her nays on the question of the presidency. For example, she has long answered queries about her White House intent with the somewhat open-ended reply, “I am not running for president,” various media have reported.
But that raised the followup: If not now, what about the future?
Fortune magazine recently clarified. In a Tuesday interview, Ms. Warren was asked, “Are you going to run for president?”
And her blunt response: “No.”
Ms. Warren has been widely talked about as a potential progressive contender for the Democratic ticket in 2016 — and one of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s biggest competitors.
