Former Florida governor Jeb Bush has donated $10,000 to a fund for the families of slain New York Police Department officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.
Officers Liu and Ramos were killed Dec. 19 in an ambush attack by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, which followed weeks of racially-charged protests in the city. Mr. Brinsley said on his social media accounts before the attack that he was going to act in retaliation for the killings of Eric Garner in Staten Island on July 17, 2014, and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. on Aug. 9, 2014.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation confirmed the donation by the former Republican governor on its Facebook page Wednesday, The Hill reported.
“Former Governor Jeb Bush, and his wife Columba, joined the thousands of Americans who have donated money to aid the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation in its quest to raise $800,000 to purchase the homes of slain NYPD officers Liu and Ramos,” the organization said. Roughly $525,000 toward its goal was raised before midnight.
