Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is heading overseas Monday for a trip to the United Kingdom as he has risen to the top or near the top of recent polling on the 2016 GOP field in the early presidential states of Iowa and New Hampshire.
The Feb. 9-13 trip, though billed as a way to shore up economic ties between Britain and Wisconsin, also gives Mr. Walker an opportunity to build up his own foreign policy credentials.
Several potential GOP presidential contenders with experience in the U.S. Senate, like Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, have pushed back on governors’ and former governors’ critiques of Washington, D.C., by touting their own foreign policy credentials ahead of 2016.
Another potential 2016 contender, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, made his own trip to the United Kingdom last week that ended up drawing attention in part for his response to a question on vaccines in the United States amid a current measles outbreak.
