The Rev. Al Sharpton couldn’t attend Nelson Mandela’s funeral in 2013, so President Obama instead brought him a piece of memorabilia to hang in his office — a copy of the program with a personally inscribed message.
What did Mr. Obama write?
“To Rev. Sharpton,” the Wall Street Journal reported. “A fellow warrior for justice!”
The souvenir hangs on Mr. Sharpton’s wall in his Midtown Manhattan offices.
At the same time, not all — especially those in the law enforcement camp — see Mr. Sharpton through that lens.
“He’s the leading advocate against the police across the country,” said former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, to the Wall Street Journal. “Every time a policeman is in trouble, they see him getting on a plane, then standing next to the family making allegations against the police.”
