Sen. Ted Cruz blasted the Obama administration Sunday for failing to shuttle arms to fighters in separate overseas conflicts, saying Ukrainians need weapons to defeat Russian-backed rebels and Kurdish fighters are ready to take on the Islamic State with the proper support.
The Texas Republican said leaders of both groups made their cases for armed support during an international conference in Munich, where Mr. Cruz, a 2016 presidential hopeful, conducted interviews to Sunday TV talk shows.
“We have a treaty obligation to stand with them,” Mr. Cruz told ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” on the topic of Ukraine.
The firebrand conservative also said there is no need for American boots on the ground to fight the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, arguing that Kurdish peshmerga troops could fill that role with a full arsenal.
He took a swipe at the “Obama-Clinton-Kerry foreign policy” of dropping a bomb here and there to fight the Islamic extremists seemingly for “photo-op” purposes.
“The path we’re on doesn’t make any sense,” he said.
