An Egyptian man who officials said led a London terrorist cell will serve 25 years in prison, according to the U.S. Justice Department.
Adel Abdel Bary, 54, led an al Qaeda terrorist cell in London that helped spread the organization’s propaganda both before and after the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. He was extradited to the U.S. from the United Kingdom in 2012 and pleaded guilty in September to terrorism charges.
“Adel Abdel Bary occupied important positions in Egyptian Islamic Jihad and al Qaeda,” said Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. “As he admitted at his plea last September, he facilitated communications by Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders, including publication of the 1998 al Qaeda fatwah to kill Americans.”
In addition to the jail time, Mr. Bary has been ordered to pay nearly $34 million, including $7.5 million in restitution to victim’s families.
