Tim Farriss, the guitarist for Australian rock band INXS, underwent surgery for an incident that severed his finger — and it’s not known if he’ll ever play again.

“The accident has caused permanent damage to Tim’s left hand and one of his fingers has been severed,” his label, Petrol Records, said in a statement, Agence France-Presse reported. “He has undergone two extensive operations to reattach his finger. Tim is now at home undergoing further treatment to assist with his recovery.”

Mr. Farriss’ left hand was injured while working on his boat in Sydney, AFP said.

In an emailed message to his bandmates, Mr. Farriss wrote: “It was horrific. I don’t know if I will be able to play properly again,” the Sydney Daily Telegraph reported.

Disaster hit INXS in 1997, when frontman Michael Hutchence committed suicide.
