The U.S. Army was denied the budget for the Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System program in fiscal 2015, but it will try again with its 2016 budget proposal.
Gun companies were invited in 2014 to come up with ideas for compact versions of its 7.62mm M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System, but the Army has been unable to secure funding to bring those ideas to fruition, Military Times reported Wednesday.
The Army’s $2 million funding proposal says that moving forward with CSASS “more effectively execute[s] a broad spectrum of missions than the M110 Semi Automatic Sniper System,” the newspaper reported.
The CSASS will provide soldiers with a lighter weapon, improved optics, reduced felt recoil and better suppressor performance, the Army’s proposal claims, Military Times reported.
