Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo and Susan Sarandon are among the more than 90 celebrities who signed an open letter Monday urging Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president in 2016.
“Our country needs someone who will stand up for working families and take on the Wall Street banks and special interests that broke our economy,” reads the letter from “Artists for Warren,” which was also signed by actors Matt Bomer, Elizabeth Olsen, Julia Stiles, Natasha Lyonne, Olivia Wilde, filmmaker Michael Moore and “The Avengers” director Joss Whedon.
“[Y]ou know what it’s like to work hard and struggle to get by — you’ve said that’s what motivated you to stand up to corporate interests and fight for the rest of us each day,” the letter said.
“We need powerful, tireless champions like you, Senator Warren, in the race to push for real solutions to income inequality and the influence of money in politics,” the entertainers said. “[W]e’re ready to show you that you have the support needed to enter this presidential race. We’re ready to fight with you, Senator Warren. Please, run for President.”
The celebrities appear to be unfazed by the fact that the Massachusetts lawmaker has repeatedly said she will not seek the presidency in 2016.
Artists for Warren held an event last month at the New York home of filmmaker Julie Pacino and Jennifer DeLia, Vanity Fair reported.
In a video played during the event, Mr. Ruffalo predicted that if Ms. Warren ran and didn’t win the primary, she would have at least pushed the conversation “more toward the progressive values that we all share,” The Washington Post reported.
“As my brother and sister artists, I’m asking that you join me in getting on board with asking Elizabeth Warren to run,” the actor said at the time.
