Dartmouth College has announced a new course that’s set for the spring semester called “10 Weeks, 10 Professors: #BlackLivesMatter,” a takeoff from the Twitter hashtag and movement that grew in popularity on the heels of St. Louis-area protests and rallies.
The class is “dedicated to considering race, structural inequality and violence in both a historical and modern context,” Campus Reform reported.
The Dartmouth, the student newspaper, reported that the class will actually be taught by 15 different professors from 10 different departments, including geography, black studies and anthropology.
“We just thought that it might be interesting and innovative and exciting to have a course that’s dedicated to this, whereas lots of other people are incorporating it into other courses,” said Abigail Neely, an assistant professor of geography in The Dartmouth.
Among the planned topics of discussion: The widely watched Ferguson, Missouri, protests that stemmed from the police shooting of black teen, Michael Brown.
“Courses like these are extremely important, and they get us all out of our comfort zones,” Kevin Gillespie, president of Dartmouth’s chapter of the NAACP, told The Dartmouth.
